To my younger brother

Letters to a younger version of me. If they reach an actual younger brother somewhere, better still.

You will wait for ready. Ready is a door that opens from the other side — you walk through unprepared or you don't walk through at all. The forum you built at fifteen ran on borrowed code and bad CSS, and thousands came anyway. Nobody checked your credentials. They checked whether the thing worked.

Ship the half-thing. Sign your name to it. The embarrassment you're bracing for weighs less than the version of you that stayed in drafts. Start. I'll cover for you.

The first move costs the same whether you make it now or rehearse it for a year — you just pay the rehearsal on top. Walk over. Say the plain thing: her name, your name, why you came. The worst answer is a no you'd have earned anyway by staying quiet.

And it isn't only her. The investor, the editor, the teacher you admire — every door opens with the same muscle. Train it small, daily. Wanting something out loud is not weakness. It's the whole game.

You want the black-belt feeling in the white-belt month. It doesn't exist. Every arc I carry — the mats, the sky, the bar, the piano — cost two years of showing up ugly. Not two weeks. Two years.

The good news: the price is fixed and everyone pays the same. Choose the thing as if you'll still be doing it in two winters, then stop negotiating with the calendar. Mastery isn't a talent. It's staying.
